Match the steel frame to the operating site

We organize supplier questions around the use of the building. Loads, openings, internal services and local permitting differ for each application.

Choose an application brief

Logistics warehouse

Confirm clear height, dock doors, rack loads, fire strategy and future expansion joints. A low price can conceal omitted loading docks or envelope details.

Ask both portal frame bidders for the same clear span, eave height, design wind speed, ground snow load and seismic design basis. Require a main frame steel grade and a marked foundation interface on the general arrangement.

Fabrication workshop

State crane capacity, wheel loads, machine foundations, ventilation and service penetrations. The frame quotation should distinguish structural and equipment support responsibilities.

A welded frame arrives with more shop work complete but can take up more shipping volume. A bolted knock-down frame packs more tightly and needs site controls for hole fit-up and bolt tightening. Compare the packing schedule, connection drawings and erection scope together.

Agricultural storage

Describe humidity, washdown, corrosive exposure, ventilation and vehicle access. Coatings and wall panels should match the storage use rather than a generic catalog image.

For EPS or PIR sandwich panels and rock-wool sandwich panels, compare core thickness, declared U-value, system fire resistance rating and installed weight. A core declaration cannot establish the rating of the wall assembly. Request the assembly test report and its joint details.

Aircraft hangar

Provide aircraft envelope, door opening, clear span, apron interface and local fire requirements. Door systems can govern frame design and must be scoped early.

For a hangar, compare the required clear span against door deflection limits and the wind load basis. Ask for the frame and door interface drawings and identify who checks clearances after erection.

Temporary site facility

Define duration, relocation plans, occupancy and access requirements. Temporary status does not remove the need for site specific approvals.

A relocatable building can reduce the work of procuring another enclosure, while a permanent building can offer a foundation and envelope designed for one site. Each destination has its own approval requirements. Compare lifting-point drawings, replacement seals and foundation interfaces before relying on reuse.

For relocation, verify whether bolted joints, panel seals and lifting points were designed for repeated handling. A one-time installation detail may not tolerate transport cycles. Request connection drawings and inspection criteria before comparing costs.

Describe the operating site

Send dimensions and site conditions so the supplier comparison addresses the actual application.
